Accessible Yoga for Older Grownups Teacher Training Information: Fitzroy, Melbourne

Information for Training in Fitzroy, Melbourne.
12th - 13th September, 2020
​2 day, 15 contact hours and 6 non-contact hours format

Requirements for Registration: 
  • 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training Certificate
  • minimum 6 months teaching experience or relevant clinical experience
  • Basic anatomy: familiarity major bones, joints and muscle groups, basic anatomy of breathing, movements of major joints
  • Short Statement of why you want to undertake this training and what you intend to do with it. 
Course Content:
  • ​Principles of how to teach a safe, fun, empowering yoga and movement class ​to older grownups and seniors.
  • An overview of the normal aging process and the concept of healthy aging.
  • An overview of principles of effective health promotion programs for older adults
  • An understanding of common conditions that older students present with such as osteoporosis, arthritis, heart disease, pain, joint replacement, anxiety and depression.
  • An understanding of the impact of aging and health conditions on an older person's mobility, daily function and class participation.
  • Principles of adaptation, modification and prop use for safety and to empower older students. 
  • Sequences for older grownups and seniors that are based on the latest research evidence.
  • Use of evidence based assessments to document functional outcomes. 
  • Yoga teacher's scope of practice and the ethics of teaching older students.
Course Structure: 
  • Yoga for Seniors and Older Grownups is a 21 hour training run over three days. The exact hours may depend on the training location. 
  • The September 2020, Melbourne training:
  • 6 hours of pre-course videos covering underpinning knowledge of anatomy, philosophy, and aging research.  Although there will be no direct assessment of knowledge gained from these videos, watching them will give you the underpinning knowledge to better understand and participate in the face to face part of the course.  The video format means we reduce lecture time during the course and increase practical participation.  You can come back to these videos after the course as well.  Links will be sent 8 weeks before the course.
  • ​ Saturday 12th September: 
    • 9 am -12:30 pm                            Yoga for grownups class, opening circle and introduction  
    • 12:30 -  1:30 pm                           Lunch
    • 1:30 - 4:30 pm                              Discussion, theory and practical training
  •  Sunday 13th September
    • 8:00 - 9:30 pm                             Morning led class
    • 9:00 - 9:30                                   Tea break              
    • 9:30 - 12:30                                 Discussion, theory and practical training
    • 12:30 - 1:30 pm                           Lunch
    • 1:30 - 4:00 pm                             Discussion, theory and practical training
    • 4:00 - 4:30 pm                            Closing circle
Supporting Materials:
  • Comprehensive, referenced Yoga for Older Grownups and Seniors Manual.
Do I need to bring a mat and props?
  • There will be all props except mats and blankets to use at the venue. Please bring your own mat and blanket if you can.  If it is too hard, we will figure it out I am sure. ​
What will I receive on completion of the course ? 
  • A certificate from Yoga for Grownups for 15 contact hours in Teaching Yoga to Seniors and Older Grownups
  • Maria is ERYT500 and YACEP with Yoga Alliance and a Registered Senior Yoga Teacher with Yoga Australia, so all contact hours can be used for continuing education points. 
Cost: 
  • Melbourne 2020 Training, 12th - 13th  September  2020: $450.00 or Early-bird $400.00 if fully registered by 15th June, 2020. 
  • A deposit of $200 will be accepted to hold your place in the course
  • Cancellations before 15th June will be refunded fully with non negotiable $50 admin fee
  • Cancellations after 15th July will be refunded only if your place can be filled from the waitlist.
  • The training will be limited to 25 people admitted on a first come first serve basis. Those interested will be put on a wait list.
Are meals and refreshments included? 
  • No, but healthy, inexpensive food will is plentiful nearby. A kettle for tea making, a microwave and a fridge for storing food will be available. The studio has a large table where we can eat lunch. ​
Where is the course being held? 
  • At the Ashtanga Yoga Centre of Melbourne.

    Fitzroy, VIC 3065 
    ​Located just off Brunswick Street, near Johnston Street, in the heart of Fitzroy.
    ​Catch the 11 tram along Brunswick Street (alight at Johnston Street).  Alternatively, take the 96 (Nicholson St) or 86 (Smith St)  tram and walk approx. 6 minutes.
    ​Buses 200, 207, 208 and 210 also run along Johnston Street.
    ​Limited 2 hour and 4 hour parking is available in surrounding streets.

  • Complete Application Form then await application approval email. If all places are filled you will be given the option of being placed on the waitlist.
  • Upon receipt of approval email, deposit course fees to confirm your place in the course: 
  • $450.00 or early-bird $400.00 if fully registered by 15th July, 2020. 
  • A deposit of $200 will be accepted to hold your place in the course
